ABOUT
JOHN WILSON

I am schooled in architecture and construction and approach my
art from a practical rather than an academic perspective. I weld
steel sculptures often incorporating found objects. I use a small
forge, my welding tools, a plasma cutter and other tools, which
I have built.
My
technical skills with materials come from a lifetime of building
things, primarily houses. I like working on large-scale sculpture
that includes movement as a significant dimension. As an artist
I am self-taught and have an affinity for reusing materials.
My
education has come from collaborating with other members of the
San Francisco Artist community in constructing large-scale art
projects.
My
art succeeds when it allows me to express unusual profiles and
surfaces. The use of simplified and stylized shapes gives visual
motion and structure to my created forms. The inspiration for
my work comes from the material and the site. The material sends
a powerful signal as to its function, and its form is derived
from the interaction of natural and manmade environmental elements.
In each of my pieces I endeavored to integrate a sense of motion
within a rigid material. I am attracted to metal as a medium because
it provides flexibility, an excellent strength to weight ratio,
stability, plus the ability to express unusual constructions and
different surfaces.
